He revolutionized the professional recording industry with his conceptions. His brilliant decilinear VCA and RMS level detection circuits, yielded a new line of innovative tools for recording engineers and musicians. Components such as the dynamic range enhancers, noise reduction processors, and compressors/limiters advanced the performance level of all recording and playback systems and are still used in every major recording/broadcast studio in the world. The dbx 160 is probably the most defining professional products dbx ever produced, (ironic that it happens to be a compressor/limiter, when the dbx name is an abbreviation for decibel expansion). It was originally introduced in 1976 and has endured variations over the following 32 years. This auction is for two of the original versions, largely viewed as dbx’s finest and truly distinctive in its sonic signature. The dbx 160 is widely used in many of the world’s top recording studios as well as live sound applications. It has unquestionably placed its sonic fingerprint on countless popular recordings throughout the years and has cemented itself as one of the few mainstays in an industry that seems to be always changing.
