Wraps: A word on vintage Ludwig drum wrap. If a drum is wrapped (Not Painted, Stained, nor varnished), with very few exceptions, vintage Ludwig drum wrap begins within the plies when the drum is formed. We do not sell re-wrapped drums, without making it very clear. I sometimes make one available on a lower-end kit. To re-wrap a drum, one must cut the wrap from between the plies, thus diminishing the structural and sonic integrity (they will never sound as good!). Re-wrapping a vintage Ludwig drum de-values it by 50% or more. Ludwig wrap is made of polyethylene and there are very few chemicals that are suited to repair the wrap. If you will read on the packages of any super glue or epoxy compounds they say, "Not to be used with polyethylene". We have developed a process that removes the lasting harmful effects of super glue, epoxies and Armor-All and other silicates that, over time, will destroy the malleability and ductility (flexibility) of the polyethylene wrap and cause it to crystallize. Without their displacement and removal, the wrap will become too brittle. Our processes restore the wrap and seams with proper glues and restore the original Luster to the Drums. We remove the haze, the yellowing, & the smoky oxidization of a half-century of "pollutants", while returning the Vibrant & Verdant colors to these Historic Ludwigs. "We Replenish as we Replace." The process adds layers upon layers of UV and Surface Protectants, for YEARS of maintenance-free enjoyment of your Vintage Ludwig Drums. Bearing Edges: Ludwig Factory Bearing Edges before the end of 1968 were shaped for Single ply heads. In 1968, with the advent of the "New" 2-ply heads, Ludwig re-tooled their bearing edge machinery and began cutting the edges at 45 degrees for the new heads. I ADAMANTLY DISCOURAGE HAVING PRE-'68 BEARING EDGES RE-CUT, AS IT THOROUGHLY DE-VALUES THE DRUM'S AUTHENTICITY! We never alter factory Bearing Edges. If a bearing edge has been left exposed & dinged-up, as so many were in the '70's (Played without bottom heads.), we use the same wood filler that Ludwig used in the 60's, and fill, harden, & restore the original edge shape. If an edge has never been re-waxed and has been allowed to dry out, we sand the dry edge smooth as we continue to coat the entire Bearing Edge with hard furniture wax, and then rub in Lanolin & Bees Wax and other compounds that will never let the Bearing Edges dry out again. We have developed a process that super-saturates the Bearing Edges, to allow a "Floating Head" (My quote) that will go a long way toward compensating for BAD TUNING! Hoops: The Ludwig factory never primed their wood hoops, but sprayed brittle black lacquer directly on the newly formed hoops. We completely remove the old paint, fine sand to the bare wood, sand out the claw marks and apply 3 new micro thin layers of new polycarbonate black paint that will bend under the pressure of the claws without cracking or breaking. Chrome hardware: We categorize all vintage Ludwig hardware on the drums that we receive as either: 1) collector grade, 2) medium grade, and 3) unacceptable grade (too bad to use). We buff, wax, & replace the original that is Collector Grade, and then finish the set with Above Average and Collector Grade chrome. All non-Ludwig parts (Washers, Screws, Bolts, and Utility Hardware) are REPLACED with Guaranteed Ludwig Specific, and PERIOD CORRECT parts! 80% of all original Ludwig hardware we receive is not collector grade and therefore must be replaced. Please Note! Please realize the shipping calculator will not give an accurate quote, as these drums will have to ship in 3 SEPARATE boxes (24x24x20, 21x21x20 & 20x24x10) and will weigh around 95 pounds with the extra packaging. Due to buyers opting to pick up, and purchase by International buyers requiring more specialized packaging, DRUMS WILL NOT BE PACKAGED BEFORE AUCTION END.
