Description
Up for sale is a vintage Gretsch 75th Anniversary Name Band round badge snare drum, circa 1958, in very good condition overall. I have owned this drum for about 10 years. I purchased it from Harry Cangany, noted drum author, historian and "Modern Drummer" contributor, who included the drum as one of that era's "most collectible snare drums" on page 61 of his book "The Great American Drums." This drum features the original "Anniversary Diamond Sparkle" that is shiny and tight and in excellent condition with no cracks. Seam is tight with some evidence of original glue. This wrap was used for only 1 year, to celebrate Gretsch's 75th anniversary, and never made it into Gretsch's regular catalog. (The finish was mentioned, but not pictured, in Gretsch's 1958 Diamond Jubilee Catalog.) The finish is a black background with silver flakes. Few of these were made. This drum has a working Micro-Sensitive strainer and adjustable four-point butt and snap-in key holder. This drum appears to be all original with long Broadcaster lugs, die-cast hoops and Gretsch Responso snares. Chrome is in good condition with light pitting on throw-off and some lugs. Die-cast hoops are in good condition with some scratches and some light pitting. Please note, the chrome is reflecting the silver flakes of the finish, and not pitting, in some of the pics. The drum has a Jasper 6-ply shell with silver painted interior. No paper tag (it was before Gretsch started using them). IMPORTANT: Bearing edges appear to be original with one unfortunate and notable exception. Plastic wood has been used to fill a ding on the batter side. See photos 8 and 9. This drum is in-round and quite playable, as I have done on occasion. As with most Gretsch drums from this era with wraps, standard Remo heads fit, but are snug. Aquarian American Vintage are a better choice. I will include a genuine Gretsch drum key, but it will not be original to this drum. All in all, a beautiful 50-year-old piece of Gretsch drumming history. This drum is being sold "as-is" with no returns accepted. Payment is by Paypal only and is expected within 48 hours of auction's close. No international sales. Shipping via UPS ground insured is a flat $30 to the lower 48 states only. I have attempted to describe this drum's condition accurately. I will attempt to answer questions in a timely manner. Thank you for checking out my auction. On Nov-17-08 at 21:04:46 PST, seller added the following information: Up for sale is a vintage Gretsch 75th Anniversary Name Band round badge snare drum, circa 1958, in very good condition overall. An "Anniversary Sparkle Pearl" was included in the 1961 No. 40 catalog. Check out Page 52 of Chet Falzerano's fine book, "The Legacy of 'That Great Gretsch Sound'" for more specifics on the origins and rarity of this finish. Sorry for the confusion. This drum also has a working twin-pad muffler.
