Description
This is a beautiful, vintage 'pressed-wood' Hohner melodeon, dating from about the 1950s. It is tuned to D/G is in Concert Pitch and excellent playing order with a gorgeous full tone - that rich Hohner sound in D/G. As most melodeon players are aware, these early Hohners were not manufactured in the key combination of D/G. The usual keys were C/F, G/C and A/D. However, all the required notes are available in these scales. So by shifting the reeds around, it is possible to create a vintage Pressed Wood Hohner in D/G. A few old, battered and unrepairable melodeons with good reeds also assists the process! Essentially one is stripping down a melodeon the same way one would for a complete overhaul, but reassembling the instrument in a different key layout. It's a lot of work. But it's worth it. I have now made several of these D/G conversions - one I play as my first instrument. It's stunning - and you can keep your Castagnaris! Hohner's 'Pressed Wood' melodeons are exactly the same dimensions as a standard Hohner D/G Pokerwork - 28cm by 28cm by 15 cm and have the same bass and treble button layout. The work involved includes... original Hohner zinc-based reeds layed out in D/G configuration Original Hohner reed blocks kept and used bass and treble reeds set and tuned Tuning set to a warm, gentle 'swing' musette; Concert Pitch A440 (+3) bass and treble reeds re-fitted and re-waxed Bass valves replaced treble end valves in excellent condition action cleaned and levelled Bass and treble Pallets resurfaced As the photos show, the melodeon it is in excellent cosmetic condition. The casework is beautiful and almost unmarked, as is the fingerboard, indicating how little use it has been given over the years. The bellows, which have an attractive and unusual green patterning, are in particularly good order and give excellent pressure and a quick response. This is a fine player's instrument. These D/G conversions take a lot of time and effort - there is no point in using a worn instrument or if you are not going to do the work properly. However, the result justifies the work and I believe also justifies the argument that Hohners, particularly the vintage instruments, offer a dynamic range and tonal quality that modern melodeons have completely lost. Anyone interested is welcome to email me with extra questions or ask me for my phone number. If you ring, I can then play the melodeon down the phone to give an idea of its tone and response etc. You are also welcome to come and have a play on it, if you can make the journey to West Cornwall or live in the area. The buy-it-now figure of £480 is what I believe is a competitive price for an instrument of this quality in this condition. The modern Hohner Pokerwork costs only a little less than this figure and is nowehere near as good. I have also set a sensible reserve. NOTE - I have a good feedback on Ebay and am keen to maintain this, so please bid with confidence. If anyone were to buy this instrument and find any genuine reason for complaint, I would take it back and refund the cost (minus postage). But I am confident this will not happen. As my feedback shows, the instruments I have sold in recent months have been very well-received. Several buyers have promptly bought second instruments from me. Folk musicians are beginning to come to me direct with queries and searching for specific instruments or advice and, where I can, I will help. Postage, which includes insurance, will be by Parcelforce 48 which is a signed for service, for mutual security. Postage overseas is by a comparable service, such as Global Priority (although be warned, this can be expensive). Therefore, overseas bidders are welcome, but please contact me for costs, since postage out of the UK can be very expensive. Also, bidders with zero feedback please make contact before bidding so I know you are serious. Thank you and good luck.
