Description
Rare opportunity to acquire a wartime Martin 000-45 with an interesting historical connection. Its original case has the name "Smiley O'Brien" written on it (professionally done). I learned from a nice and helpful Martin guitar aficionado that Smiley was a guitar player who joined (in 1938) the band formed by Alton and Rabon Delmore -- "The Delmore Brothers". Smiley is credited on guitar from the Delmore Brothers recordings of that era. See here: http://wildcat53.tripod.com/artists/delmore_b/biography.html This instrument appears to have been professionally refinished a longer while ago – I would assume perhaps 30 years ago or so, since the finish has nicely sunk into the grain of the spruce top and it has assumed a fair amount of playwear, too, in particular around the sound hole where the strumming went through the finish. There is a spot underneath the bridge where the finish is somewhat hazy – most likely as a result of an attempt to loosen the bridge plate underneath by applying heat to the surface of the top. The finish in this area is still intact but lighter in colour. Other issues are a longer top crack visible under the finish, a crack on the back, and one to the side at the bottom where the strap pin goes is, all professionally repaired by Gruhn guitars (more recently). This is where the guitar received a replica bridge and (slightly oversized) bridge plate and a new fingerboard binding. The guitar has perfect set up with newer frets, low action with plenty of saddle and a great, complex tone. It comes with orig. case that was customized with the original owner’s name. Not a perfect specimen, but still a super rare, great sounding, historical instrument, one of only about 123 made of the 14fret model. In all orig. condition this would be over 100.000 USD.Trades or interesting trade-ins (Gibson Nick Lucas, pre-29 L-5, OM-28) might be considered. Buyer pays actual shipping cost, estimate ca. 350 USD to the US, no import tax or customs duties involved, as “made in the USA”. No returns. I accept paypal, money wire, and certified cheques. Please have a look at my other rare instruments that are for sale on ebay right now. As this is also offered locally and I reserve the right to cancel the auction at any time. If you are interested, please ask your questions early and don't wait with your bid until the last minute.
