Description
I am delighted to offer this important American violin on eBay, made in 1890 by the famous Boston violin maker, Jerome Bonaparte Squier sometimes referred to as the "American Stradivari." It is guaranteed that this is an authentic JB Squier violin with its original label. William Henley, in his "Universal Dictionary of Violin & Bow Makers" writes: American Made Violins Fine handmade American violins are rapidly appreciating in price. They are very much in demand by collectors and players alike. Massachusetts is the birthplace of violin making in America. Today, the violins of the Massachusetts violin makers (particularly those of Boston), made around the turn of the 18th century through the early period of the 20th century, are among the most sought after violins. Jerome Bonaparte Squier Jerome Bonaparte Squier has been ranked among one of the top talented violin makers of the late 18th and early 19th century and his name is always listed among the top violin makers of America. Currently, one of Jerome Bonaparte Squier's violins is on sale at a reputable violin shop, and is listed for $20,000.00. Here is the link to that listing: http://www.johnsonstring.com/american-collection/squier.htm Measurements Back: 358 mm Upper Bout: 165 mm Middle Bout: 112 mm Lower Bout: 205 mm This 118 year old violin presented here on eBay is in perfect shape except a 1cm crack located on the upper eye of the treble f hole extending upward and some varnish scratches and varnish wear. There are no other issues to be mentioned. The 1cm crack has been professionally repaired with a cleat glued to the crack internally. This crack can not extend in any direction and become larger, since one side of the crack is the opening of the upper eye of the f hole and the other side ends at the purfling near the edge. This crack has no effect on the sound of the violin and is very common for older violins. The workmanship of this violin is immaculate. The scroll is bold and magnificent and fully undercut. The f holes are gracious with very delicately fluted lower wings, and the purfling has been masterfully inlaid. The inside work is precise and very clean. The detail and execution is magnificent and demonstrates the work of the solid hands of a highly skilled and accomplished master. The violin has been set up with a new set of high grade Dominant strings. Tuning pegs are made of dense ebony with golden inlay with matching tail piece and ebony chinrest. The tone of this violin is wonderful. It is vibrant, complex, wide open, and lively. It is well balanced and smooth with layers of color. The sound sustains marvelously with high level of projection. This is a rare concert violin, suited for soloist use in any size venue. Sound The tone of this violin is wonderful. It is vibrant, complex, wide open, and lively. Please listen to the sound samples provided below, and judge the violin’s sound for yourself. The samples were prepared with a regular inexpensive microphone, which does not do justice to the real sound of this violin. The live sound is much better than the samples, however, the samples will give you some indication as into how this violin sounds. There is some background distortion noise present in these samples. The distortion occured once I uploaded the samples to YouTube. If you are really serious about this violin, you may provide me with your e-mail address, and I will be glad to send you the MP3 files that do not have the background distortion noise.
