Play Civil War Band Music with modern instruments for: School Programs Civil War Reenactments Play with small mixed brass ensemble or trombone, baritone, or tuba quartet Bundled Package of 10 Arrangements for modern instruments from Civil War Band Books and 19th Century publishers Included in the collection are: The Battle Cry of Freedom/Kingdom Coming (Year of Jubilo): The Battle Cry of Freedom by George F. Root in 1862 was sung by troops going into battle as well as on the drill fields and campfires. Written as a rallying song for Union soldiers, Southern soldiers used it as well, with their own version. Kingdom Coming (Year of Jubilo), written by Henry Clay Work in 1862, is a comic song about the disappearance of a plantation owner as the Union army approached and slaves celebrated their freedom. This rearrangement was made from the band books of the 1st Brigade Band of Brodhead, Wisconsin. Organized in 1858, the band, directed by E. O. Kimberly, served in General Sherman’s campaign in the Confederate States of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Captain Shepherd’s Quickstep: Captain Shepherd’s Quickstep by Claudio Grafulla was first printed as a piano composition in 1850, but by the time of the Civil War the quick step appeared in the band books of many Civil War bands. Grafulla, a prominent composer, performer and arranger was director of the 7th Regiment Band, New York National Guard during the war. After the war several publishers collected and saved the hand written band books and published printed versions of the music they found. This version came from Squire’s Cornet Band Olio No. 3, published in 1875. Cottage by the Sea Quickstep is a quickstep arrangement of two ballads by Franz Abt and John Rogers Thomas, arranged by A. Squire. When the Swallows Homeward Fly was composed in 1850 by Franz Abt, a German composer of over 3000 pieces of music. He traveled to America in 1872 for a performing tour. John Rogers Thomas, a Welsh-American composer of popular songs and operettas, wrote Cottage by the Sea in 1856 and taught music in Brooklyn and New York City. This version came from Squire’s Cornet Band Olio No. 3, published in 1875. St. Patrick’s Day Quick Step: St. Patrick’s Day Quick Step is a medley of three traditional Irish songs. Gary Owen is best known as the official march of George Armstrong Custer’s 7th Cavalry Regiment. Today it is the official march of the 1st Cavalry Division of the U. S. Army. St. Patrick’s Day and Nora Breina are also traditional Irish songs, favorites of the many Irish soldiers of the Civil War. This quick step is from the John F. Stratton collection of Civil War band music. Stratton was a dealer and manufacturer of band instruments during the war, who compiled and published printed arrangements of Civil War band music from the hand-written band books originally used by military bands. Thady You Gander Quick Step: Thady You Gander is also a medley of three Irish jigs to form a military quick step. Paddy Whack, The Black Joke, and Thady You Gander are the names of the traditional songs in the medley, although The Black Joke was also included in a Robert Burns collection of Scottish songs. Farewell My Lilly Dear March by Stephen Foster was published in the Brass Band Journal, 1853 - 1854, and arranged by G. W. E. Friederich, using a ballad by Stephen Foster in the trio. Old Dog Tray March is an version of Stephen Foster's Old Dog Tray from the 1853-54 Brass Band Journal. The arrangement, by G. W. E. Friederich, calls for the members of the band and the audience to join in singing "Woof, Woof" as part of the performance. Murdoch's Quick Step: Murdoch's Quick Step by H. G. Frankenfield was published in 1875 in Squire's Olio No. 3, a collection of music from the Civil War. Published in Cincinnati, Ohio, the collection was one of several collections made from the original band books, which were often hand-written and difficult to read. Listen to the Mocking Bird: A favorite of cornet soloists, Listen to the Mocking Bird is a sentimental song about the visit of a mocking bird to the grave of a beautiful young woman. The music was written by Richard Milburn and published in 1855. This arrangement is from the band books of the Port Royal (South Carolina) Post Band. Indiana Polka: Indiana Polka was written by Edmund Jaeger, arranged by J. Schatzman, and published in the Peter's Saxhorn Journal, 1859. Polkas were introduced to the United States in the 1840's and were played during the Gold Rush days. By the time of the Civil War Americans had been playing polkas for twenty years and the Civil War band books were filled with polkas. -------------------------------------------- Rearrangements of Civil War band music for modern instruments by George F. Simpson enable today’s school and community musicians to play and enjoy the music of America’s past. Photocopies of the original band books, 19th century scores, sheet music and other publications, and a few early 20th century publications are used, all in the public domain. Wherever possible the music is the same as in the original Civil War band books. Because the lead in Civil War band music was usually played by E flat cornets, transposing to a user friendly key is often necessary to keep the music in the range of modern instruments. In all cases every attempt is made to keep the arrangement as close to the original band arrangement as possible. Parts included in all arrangements are: Part 1: Trumpet I in B flat Baritone T. C.
